Texas Health Sports Network Concussion Test

ImPACT Post Injury Test

It is strongly recommended that any player who receives a concussion during At&t League play sit out a minimum of 14 days.  The league encourages players to be examined by, and obtain a signed written medical release from, a MD/DO before they return to play.  It is suggested that any player without the written release should not participate in practices or games until afterthe 14th day period.

Special Reminder!

Texas Health Resources can provide a list of 22 Physicians in the metroplex who specialize in concussionsand can implement the ImPACT Post Injury Test as a toolto help determine when a player is able to return to play.

My child has and/or reports have signs and symptoms of a concussion either at the AT&T league games or in other hockey play including games/practices. Now what happens?”

1)      The league must be notified immediately. The player will be put on a 14 day disabled list that begins when the concussion is reported. This means that if several days lapse prior to reporting, the clock starts after those days have lapsed.
2)      Don Cochren and Dave Ambler will communicate with each other so that the league and the Texas Health Ben Hogan Athletic Trainers know to restrict the player from playing in the next game in case they show up before the time period is over.
3)      The parent may use any physician they choose to treat the concussion. However, if the parent wants to use the ImPACT* baseline test and the post injury test as a tool, then they are required to select one if the credentialed impact docs listed on the AT&T Metroplex High School hockey web page. While there is not guarantee this will ensure faster return to play, the ImPACT* test is a good tool to help manage the injury in a safe and timely manner. A player may return sooner than the 14 day waiting period by using one of the ImPACT *credentialed physicians.
4)      All of the ImPACT* credentialed physicians have access to the baseline tests and most can provide the post injury test in their office. Under NO circumstances should a parent/coach or manager use the baseline testing instructions used in the pre season group and home baseline testing. The post test needs to be supervised one on one using a different log on web address. If there are questions about this process, please contact Ken Locker 214-345-5010. kennethlocker@texashealth.org
5)      The accepted medical standard of care is that after the player is released to return to play, they should have 2-3 days of increasing physical activity without contact to demine if the symptoms they initially experienced  return.
6)      The parent and or treating physician must send a written note via fax or by hand to Dave Ambler at least 24 hours before the next game to return to play. Dave will copy Don Cochren on the clearance from the League to insure the rink athletic trainer knows of the clearance.
