25th Season Concludes with 5 Championships

by Keith Andresen

On March 3rd, Keller got by Frisco West 2-1 to win the Gold City Championship and Denton County beat Plano East 6-2 to claim the Silver Crown. The Varsity Bronze and JV Championships were played on April 7th with Highland Park, Northwest and Keller claiming titles.

In the Gold Division Keller scored once in the second and added an insurance goal in the 3rd to nip State Champ Frisco West 2-1.  Frisco pulled the goalie and scored with 19 seconds left but could not get the equalizer in the final seconds.  Keller claimed both the regular season and playoff championships, while Frisco West claimed the State title in a very balanced Gold Division. Congratulations Keller!

Denton County stormed out to a 5-0 first period lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 6-2 victory to take home the Silver City Championship.  The Spartans knocked off both the South Division regular season champ, Southlake Carroll in the semi-final, and the North Division champ, Plano East in the final, to take home the banner. Congratulations Denton County.

In the Varsity Bronze game, Highland Park stormed out to a 6-0 first period lead and cruised to a 7-1 victory over Prosper. The Scots had a 17-2 shot advantage in the first period before Prosper was able to get on the board.  THe top 2 teams during the regular season fought evenly the rest of the way but the early deficit was too much for Prosper to overcome. Congratulations Highland Park.

In the Junior Varsity Final Northwest defeated Frisco East 7-3. The underdog Frisco club fought hard but Northwest just had too much firepower.  Northwest built a 6-1 lead before Frisco closed the gap late in the 3rd period.  Congratulations Northwest.

Keller won the JV Bronze Championship with a thrilling 6-5 victory over Plano Senior. There were four lead changes and the game was tied 4-4 at the end of the second period.  Keller scored twice in the third before Plano Senior scored with just over three minutes to play, however, the Wildcats could not bang home the equalizer in the final minutes.  Congratulations Keller.
