In September, DFW and the Hockey Community lost a dear friend when Steven Niekamp passed away. At the time of his passing, Steven was the Police Chief in Hurst but was known to many in the hockey community as an avid Stars fan, high school hockey supporter and adult league player. The Dallas Stars and the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey league send our condolences to Steven's wife, Angela and his family.
Steve, the person
- A shining example of faith by service to his wife, family, and community in every way
- Would have retired in January 2026 and was planning to travel with Angela to see new things and visit his children in the Northwest (Steven) and OKC (Sarah).
- Could be found having water balloon fights or playing catch with kids at every city event in Hurst. He loved his community and believed pouring into its children was the most effective way to create a better place. This also showed in his attendance as a chaperone at countless summer camps and children’s/youth events, none of which were related to, or required by, his job.
- Succeeded by longtime friend and work colleague, Billy Keadle, as Police Chief of Hurst, who also spoke at his funeral.
Hockey tidbits
- Avid, hardcore hockey fan and was still playing men’s rec league until his passing
- Rarely missed watching Stars games when he was able
- Steven (son) played for the LD Bell club team in High School (2009 grad)
